The Kindergarten Words

High Frequency Words

High frequency words are those words that are seen most often in books. Often these words (which are sometimes called 'sight words' or 'dolch words') are hard for children to learn. Lots of practice at home, really helps. We will study the following words in our classroom.

a and are

have he here

I is

said see she

the to

Once these are learned then there are some more to help with reading. Here are some words and little pictures that can be printed off.

Here is another very good site for Dolch Word Cards at various levels. Print off two sets of the cards and play Concentration! It is best to only print off one set at a time. Learn set one first, then move onto set two, etc..

Another good list of Pre-Primer and Primer words for kindergarten can be found at Mrs. Perkin's web site. There are some great word cards to print off.

Ms Yi has a web page with Fry's Instant Words.

One more useful site is Mrs. Buchel's list of sight words.

Check your ability to read words by clicking on them in the Talking Word Wall. You can see and hear them!

As you learn the words there are some fun games to play below. Scroll down below to 'Some Word Games.'

Putting the words together in little phrases is the next step in reading and writing. Print these little cards off as you learn the Dolch Word sets above. Cover the phrases with little markers while you read them. A full card of markers shows how well you are doing!! Cover them with m&m's then eat them off to celebrate!
